The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) warned of a serious increase in the use of artificial intelligence technologies to produce fake sexual images of children, noting that around 1.2 million children were subjected to this type of abuse in just one year.
The organization confirmed that what is known as deepfake technology is not merely a digital abuse but represents a real assault on children, due to the long-term psychological and social harm it causes, even in the absence of direct physical abuse.
UNICEF called for urgent action on both legal and technical levels, including tightening legislation, holding involved parties accountable, developing tools to monitor and remove fake content, and enhancing international cooperation to protect children from these growing digital violations.
