A research team has managed to solve a mystery that has puzzled scientists for many years, concerning the distinctive scent that emanates from mummies in ancient Egypt, using an advanced scientific technique that allowed for the analysis of vapors emitted from these rare artifacts without causing any damage to them.

A Non-Destructive Approach to Studying Mummies

Previously, archaeologists relied on traditional analytical methods that required direct sampling from the wrappings or materials used in embalming, which posed a risk to the mummy's integrity due to the potential disintegration of its molecular components or damage from repeated examination.
However, a team of organic geochemical scientists adopted an alternative approach, capturing volatile organic compounds present in the air surrounding the mummy, which are the molecules responsible for the scents that humans can distinguish. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, highlighting the importance of this technique in studying artifacts without harming them.

The Scent in Ancient Egyptian Civilization: Ritual and Spiritual

Researchers indicate that scent held symbolic significance in ancient Egyptian culture, as it was associated with religious rituals and beliefs about the afterlife. The use of spices and aromatic oils in embalming was not only aimed at imparting a pleasant smell but also intended to mask the odors resulting from the decomposition of the body, alongside its protective role in reducing the activity of microorganisms and pests.

Chemical Analysis Accurately Identifies Embalming Components

The study relied on the analysis of dozens of samples from mummies preserved in European and British museums, including remains of resins, wrappings, and human tissues. The samples were placed in special chambers to collect the gases emitted from them before undergoing advanced analytical techniques that enabled scientists to identify the materials used in embalming.
The results revealed that natural fats, vegetable oils, beeswax, tree resins, and bitumen were among the most prominent components, with clear differences between different time periods, as embalming recipes evolved from simple compositions to more complex and varied ones over time.

A Promising Tool for Understanding History Without Harming Artifacts

Researchers believe that analyzing volatile organic compounds represents a rapid and non-destructive scientific means of studying mummies, and may contribute in the future to determining their chronological sequence and understanding the evolution of embalming techniques with greater precision, while preserving the integrity of these unique archaeological treasures.
