At least 11 people have died following the collapse of an unlicensed gold mine in eastern Guinea, local officials reported, in an incident that reflects the risks associated with traditional mining activities in the region.
Details of the Incident and Recovery of Victims
A representative of the Red Cross, Amara Diallo, stated that the incident occurred near the town of Koundianakoro, where a group of women were working inside the site when the mine collapsed. He added that rescue teams were able to recover the bodies hours after the incident, while a young man died from his injuries the following day.
Dispute Over the Nationalities of the Victims
A local official clarified that the victims were engaged in washing and processing mining waste, a common activity in gold extraction areas. While the Red Cross reported that all victims were from Guinea, a municipal official indicated that the women who lost their lives were from Burkina Faso.
Mineral Wealth vs. Economic Challenges
Guinea is one of the countries rich in mineral resources, yet it faces significant economic challenges, with nearly half of its population living below the poverty line, according to estimates from the World Food Programme.
Risks of Traditional Mining
The artisanal mining sector in several African countries experiences recurring accidents due to weak safety measures and workers relying on primitive methods for mineral extraction, increasing the likelihood of landslides and casualties.
