A preliminary U.S. military investigation has revealed a high likelihood of American forces being responsible for the attack that targeted a girls' school in southern Iran, resulting in the deaths of dozens of children, in one of the most controversial incidents since the outbreak of the recent war in the region.
Reuters reported that U.S. officials stated that military investigators are examining indicators suggesting U.S. forces' involvement in the strike that occurred on Saturday; however, the investigation is not yet complete, and new evidence may emerge that could alter the current assessment.

The investigation is still open
Officials did not disclose additional details regarding the evidence on which the preliminary investigation was based, including the type of munitions used or the entity that actually carried out the attack.
The U.S. Secretary of Defense confirmed that the military has opened a formal investigation into the incident, emphasizing that the United States does not target civilians or civilian facilities.
He stated during a press briefing:
"We certainly do not target civilian objectives at all, but we are investigating the incident to understand what happened."
The U.S. Secretary of State also confirmed that deliberately targeting a school is out of the question for the U.S. military.
Iran reports 150 students killed
A girls' school in the city of Minab in southern Iran was attacked on the first day of U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran.
The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva stated that the attack resulted in the deaths of around 150 students, although this number has not been independently verified.
Iranian television aired footage of a mass funeral for the victim girls, where small coffins covered with Iranian flags were seen amid large crowds of mourners.
Calls for an international investigation
For its part, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for an independent investigation into the incident, asserting that the entity that carried out the attack bears the responsibility for clarifying its circumstances.
The Commission warned that targeting schools, hospitals, or any civilian facilities could be considered a war crime under international humanitarian law if proven to be intentional.
U.S.-Israeli military coordination
In this context, informed sources reported that the United States and Israel are coordinating their strikes inside Iran by dividing operational areas and targets.
While Israel focuses on missile launch sites in western Iran, the United States targets military and naval objectives in the southern part of the country.
If Washington's involvement in the school attack is confirmed, it could be considered one of the deadliest incidents affecting civilians during U.S. military operations in the Middle East in recent decades.
