An American military base near Erbil International Airport in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was attacked by two drones today, Friday, resulting in smoke rising and explosions being detected around the base, according to reports from Reuters and AFP.
The attack targeted a base housing coalition forces led by the United States to combat ISIS, and it also led to a halt in production at an oil field operated by an American company in the Sarsank area of Dohuk province, due to a "terrorist attack," according to a statement from the Iraqi Ministry of Natural Resources. No human injuries were reported.
Regional Context
This attack comes amid rising regional tensions following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran about a week ago, which has gradually pushed the Kurdistan Region into the conflict zone.
Several Iraqi factions loyal to Iran claimed responsibility for attacking American bases in the region using drones and rockets, asserting that they would not remain neutral. In contrast, Iraq has repeatedly stated its desire not to be drawn into direct conflicts, even though its territory has become a stage for repeated attacks.
Escalation of Attacks on Infrastructure
The attack on the oil field operated by the American company HKN caused damage to the field's facilities and temporarily halted production, according to security sources. The air defenses in Erbil reported that they intercepted several drones in the airspace of the city, which also houses a large American consulate.
This recent escalation reflects the widening scope of drone attacks against American targets in Iraq and increases fears of the region turning into a direct battleground between regional and international powers.
