The Syrian Scientific Association for Informatics announced last Tuesday evening the names of the national team that will represent Syria in the World Artificial Intelligence Olympiad (IOAI) for high school students, scheduled to be held in the Chinese capital, Beijing, from 2 to 9 August next, with the participation of more than 60 countries and regions around the world.
This announcement came during the closing ceremony of the first national competition for artificial intelligence, held at the National Library in Damascus, in the presence of representatives from academic and technical institutions and the families of the participating students.
The competition resulted in the selection of five students to represent Syria in the global finals, namely:
George Yazji, Bashara Abdullah Nashid, Mohammad Ward, Julian Wasouf, Julia Al-Eitoni
In his speech during the ceremony, Dr. Ahmed Basal Al-Khashi, the President of the Syrian Scientific Association for Informatics, emphasized that this competition represents a qualitative leap in building youth competencies capable of representing Syria in international technological forums, praising the performance of the students who reached the finals after distinguished competitive rounds.
The national coordinator of the competition, Ahmed Handi, explained that the association has been keen on conducting intensive training for the participants over the past weeks, enabling it to select a group of outstanding individuals to represent the country globally, considering this participation as a new beginning for Syria's presence in the global artificial intelligence scene.
On the other hand, the event director, Engineer Ahmed Firas Hamada, pointed out that this competition is the first challenge organized by the association after obtaining official accreditation as a national partner of IOAI, and that the national team was selected based on the performance of the participants in the training sessions and competitions held between 14 and 30 June last.
The ceremony concluded with honoring the winning students with participation certificates, and honoring the trainers and supervisors with certificates of appreciation, expressing the association's gratitude for their great efforts in supporting the new generation of Syrian innovators.
With this step, Syria takes its first steps towards enhancing its presence on the international stage in the field of artificial intelligence, relying on ambitious young talents, supported by a scientific environment that is beginning to recover and regain its ability to achieve and compete.
