“Break Mode” by Kit Kat: An Innovation that Completely Disconnects from the Internet and Calls

An Unconventional Innovation from Kit Kat for Digital Isolation
The global chocolate brand Kit Kat has introduced a new marketing experience called “BreakMode”, aimed at providing users with a true break from smartphones through a chocolate wrapper capable of completely isolating the phone from the digital world.
The Idea of “Break Mode”: Turning Breaks into a Disconnected Experience
The idea came as part of a collaboration between Kit Kat and the creative agency Ogilvy in Colombia, where a special wrapper was designed to serve as both a symbolic and practical space, isolating the user from notifications and calls, granting them a “mandatory digital break”.
Isolation Technology: Using a Faraday Cage to Block Signals
The innovation is based on the principle of a Faraday cage, a technology that prevents electromagnetic waves from passing through.
When the phone is placed inside the wrapper, all communications are blocked including:
- Phone calls
- 4G and 5G networks
- Bluetooth
- GPS
This turns the phone into a completely disconnected device.
Materials and Design: Multi-layer Engineering Inside a Chocolate Wrapper
The wrapper consists of a precise geometric design including:
- A layer of copper to absorb signals
- A polyester layer to enhance structure
- An outer layer of polypropylene for damage resistance
- A secure closure system that prevents any signal leakage
This design aims to achieve complete and stable isolation of the phone inside the wrapper.
Testing Results: 100% Digital Isolation
According to the development team, the wrapper was tested under various conditions to measure signal strength and electromagnetic isolation, and the results showed complete isolation at 100%, meaning all forms of communication are interrupted when used.
Project Phase: A Marketing Experience Not Available for Sale
Despite the interest generated by the innovation, the “Break Mode” project is still in a trial phase, having been showcased at events such as technology fairs in Panama and some universities and parties, without being commercially launched yet.
Estimates suggest that the company is still studying the feasibility of launching it in the markets.
The Broader Context: A Growing Trend to Integrate Food with Technology
This innovation falls within a recent wave of experiments that blend food and technology, aiming to provide unconventional consumer experiences.
The project reflects an attempt to redefine the concept of “break” in the age of constant connectivity, by turning a piece of chocolate into a symbolic tool for temporary separation from the digital world.
