Seoul Restructures Its Military Intelligence Amid Rising Threats from Pyongyang

South Korea announced a plan to restructure its defense counterintelligence command by 2027, aiming to enhance transparency and efficiency in military operations, amid rising threats from North Korea.
The plan includes transferring some investigative and intelligence-gathering powers to other agencies, following previous criticisms regarding the command overstepping its authority.
Defense Minister Ahn Kyung-duk stated that the reforms aim to ensure "political neutrality and focus on core missions," emphasizing the importance of change in facing increasing nuclear security challenges from the north.
Seoul also plans to expand defense cooperation with Washington through joint naval manufacturing projects to enhance military readiness against any potential threats.
