The Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Cairo this morning, Tuesday, in a new diplomatic move aimed at resuming cooperation between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, which Iran suspended last July.
Araghchi is scheduled to hold a meeting with the agency's director general Rafael Grossi to conclude negotiations on a new nuclear cooperation protocol.
This came in statements to the official Iranian news agency "IRNA", which confirmed that the visit to Cairo paves the way for resuming work with the agency after the suspension of cooperation due to the Israeli military escalation in June, which included bombing nuclear and military facilities in Iran, resulting in the deaths of more than a thousand people.
Grossi warned yesterday that time is running out to complete the talks, emphasizing the need for goodwill and responsibility to fully resume inspections.
He said at a meeting of the agency's Board of Governors, which includes 35 countries: "There is still time, but not much," expressing hope for reaching an agreement in the coming days.
For his part, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Ismail Baghaei stated that the negotiations are positive but have not yet reached a final outcome, confirming ongoing communication with the agency despite the challenges.
These developments come amid rising international tensions, as France, Britain, and Germany activated the snapback mechanism in August to reimpose United Nations sanctions on Iran under the 2015 nuclear agreement, from which the United States withdrew in 2018.
It is worth noting that the International Atomic Energy Agency had expressed regret over Tehran's suspension of cooperation, pointing to Iran's acceleration of high-enriched uranium production to 60%, a level close to the 90% required for military use, with its stockpile reaching 440.9 kilograms in June, exceeding the agreed ceiling of 3.67%.
The Iranian nuclear file is a critical issue in international relations, amid growing concerns over escalating conflicts in the region.
