A Russian plane arrived this morning, Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at Damascus International Airport carrying a high-level delegation from Moscow, on a surprise and previously unannounced visit, according to the official Syrian television.
Diplomatic sources in the Syrian capital confirmed that the Russian delegation includes prominent figures from military and political officials, headed by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak , in a move that reflects Moscow's increasing interest in enhancing its presence in Syria, especially in light of the rapid developments in the region and the ongoing Israeli escalation against Syrian military sites in recent weeks.
The Syrian news agency "SANA" reported that the delegation will hold extensive discussions with the Syrian leadership covering military and economic cooperation files, in addition to discussing the reconstruction file, which represents a top priority for the Syrian government.
This visit comes after a previous agreement between Moscow and Damascus to open a new chapter in bilateral relations, following the visit of Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Al-Shaibani to Moscow, where both sides reaffirmed their support for dialogue and the rights of minorities in Syria.
In light of these developments, attention is turning to the outcomes of these talks that may reshape the features of Syrian-Russian relations amid current challenges, with the security and defense cooperation file remaining a top priority.
