Walid Jumblatt: No Objection to a Popular Referendum on Joining the Abraham Accords

"The Israeli Era"... and the Search for a Two-State Solution
In a statement to the Lebanese channel "MTV", Jumblatt said that Lebanon has entered what he described as the "Israeli era", but emphasized that this does not mean surrendering to Israeli conditions or abandoning the fundamental demand for a two-state solution.
He confirmed that the fate of the West Bank "is heading towards the fate of the Gaza Strip", pointing out that the promises made by former US President Donald Trump are "unachievable".
Between Israel and Iran... Mutual Pressures on Lebanon
Jumblatt viewed that Lebanon does not tie its future to a two-state solution, but lives "between the Israeli hammer and the Iranian anvil", affirming that Tehran deludes itself into thinking it can use Lebanon as a bargaining chip with the United States.
Sheikh Naim Qassem, Deputy Secretary-General of Hezbollah, called for the realization that Iran "cannot use Lebanon or part of the Lebanese Shiites to improve its negotiating conditions regarding its nuclear program or otherwise".
Hezbollah's Weapons... and Questions About Israeli Strikes
Jumblatt noted that he heard "information indicating that 90% of Hezbollah's major strategic weapons have been destroyed", questioning: "If this is the case, why do the Israelis continue to strike Lebanon? Is the goal to displace the entire Shiite community?" While appreciating "the sacrifices of Hezbollah martyrs who fell defending Lebanon", he called for an internal discussion within the party to "not turn again into a tool in the hands of Iran".
The 1949 Armistice Agreement: Lebanon's Last Cards?
Jumblatt considered that the 1949 armistice agreement remains the basis of the relationship between Lebanon and Israel, questioning the possibility of "jumping immediately over it" in the absence of indicators of a genuine desire for peace from Israel.
He added: "What cards does Lebanon have other than the armistice?" stressing the importance of the role played by the Lebanese army in the south "to confiscate strategic weapons".
Call to Strengthen the Lebanese Army: 10,000 Additional Soldiers
The Druze leader praised the role of the Lebanese army, calling for strengthening its human and logistical capabilities by recruiting at least 10,000 additional personnel, given the urgent need to bolster the military institution in light of current security challenges.
Multiple American Messages: "Who Speaks on Behalf of Washington?"
Jumblatt addressed the meeting he had with an American delegation, describing it as "multi-opinion", and expressing his desire to know "who actually speaks on behalf of the United States", believing that the American ambassador in Beirut, Aissa, close to President Trump, can clarify this ambiguity.
He criticized the statements of Morgan Ortagus, Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East, regarding the establishment of an economic zone on the ruins of Gaza or Lebanon, describing them as "unacceptable".
The Fall of Assad: "Divine Justice" and Victory for the Syrian People
In another context, Jumblatt considered the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad after long decades in power to be a "great victory" for the Syrian people and the majority of Lebanese, describing what happened as "the fate of every tyrant no matter how long it takes".
He said that this development represents for him "the restoration of rights" for himself, for President Saad Hariri, and for the martyrs of the March 14 uprising, noting that revealing the fate of thousands of Syrians buried in the deserts reminds of the "depth of the tragedy".
