The United Nations announced today, Friday, that about one million Syrian refugees have returned to their country since the fall of the overthrown regime last December, while 1.8 million internally displaced persons have returned to their original areas since the beginning of this year, amid complex humanitarian conditions.
Despite this wide movement regarding returns, more than 7 million internally displaced persons still live in displacement camps within Syria, in addition to more than 4.5 million refugees distributed in neighboring countries and abroad.
The international organization confirmed that returnees face enormous challenges, the most prominent of which are the destruction of infrastructure, unstable security conditions, and a scarcity of job opportunities, making sustainable return impossible at the present time.
The United Nations emphasized that achieving stability requires development projects and massive investments in the affected areas to ensure the rebuilding of local communities and provide a safe environment that enables returnees to settle and integrate.
