Starbucks announced the closure of hundreds of its branches as part of a restructuring plan aimed at reviving its struggling business due to a widespread boycott campaign over its stance on the Israeli war on Gaza.
The company's CEO, Brian Niccol, stated that a comprehensive review of branch locations revealed a large number of unprofitable branches, prompting the company to make the closure decision this month, bringing Starbucks to only 18,300 branches by the end of September.
The company also announced the layoff of about 900 additional employees from its headquarters, bringing the total layoffs since the beginning of the year to around 1,900 employees, in a move that comes as part of restructuring efforts expected to cost one billion dollars.
These measures followed a decline in demand and profits due to a boycott campaign that spread through social media, as the company was blamed for its alleged support of Israel through financial donations to organizations linked to the Israeli army, which significantly affected its sales.
In an effort to regain customer trust, Starbucks revealed plans to redesign more than 1,000 branches, focusing on a more comfortable atmosphere and improving the product menu by reducing some items and launching new products such as croissants and protein additions.
Despite these steps, the company's future remains uncertain with the ongoing boycott and rising operating costs, forcing it to innovate more comprehensive strategies to improve its financial performance and rebuild its image in global markets.
