In an important step towards enhancing military cooperation between the two countries, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced today, Thursday, September 11, that Turkey has started training the new Syrian army.
This came a month after signing the military cooperation agreement between Damascus and Ankara last August, which stipulated that Turkey would provide technical support and military consultations, in addition to training Syrian forces.
An official source from the Turkish Ministry of Defense reported that the training process includes providing military consultations and technical support to the Syrian army, and Turkey is also contributing weapons and logistical tools to support the capabilities of the Syrian army under this agreement.
* Israel Conducts Attacks on Turkish Equipment in Syria?
In the same context, the Turkish source denied reports that Israel had launched attacks on Turkish military equipment in Syria, confirming that these reports are incorrect.
It added that the Turkish military situation in northern Syria has not witnessed any changes and that the personnel and Turkish equipment in the region remain as they are.
Israeli reports had claimed that Israel carried out a landing operation in the countryside of Damascus in late August 2025, where Turkish equipment was destroyed, which was said to have been used for espionage operations against Israel.
An Israeli official stated that the operation came as a warning from Tel Aviv to Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara after he allowed Turkish presence in Syria, cautioning against "playing with fire."
* Strengthening Relations Between Ankara and Damascus
According to the agreement signed between the defense ministries of Turkey and Syria, both sides will cooperate in several areas, including providing military and logistical support and conducting joint exercises.
The source also indicated that this cooperation came after the improvement of relations between the two countries following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara welcomed the political and military rapprochement between the two sides.
* Turkey's Role in Supporting the New Regime in Syria
Since the change that occurred in Syria after the fall of Assad's regime, Turkey has moved to support the new regime in Damascus, as Ankara hosted a number of Syrian officials, including Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara and Defense Minister Marhaf Abu Qasra, in a move indicating the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.
In this way, this military cooperation represents a major turning point in the relationship between Turkey and Syria, reflecting the new directions in regional politics that may contribute to changing the military equations in the region.
