The U.S. Congress approved on Wednesday the repeal of sanctions imposed on Syria under the Caesar Act, which was originally enacted to punish President Bashar al-Assad's regime for its human rights violations.
This decision came as part of an amendment included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that was passed last night.
The amendment in Section 8369 titled "Repeal of the Caesar Act for the Protection of Civilians in Syria of 2019" stipulates that the U.S. president provides periodic reports every 180 days for a duration of 4 years to the relevant congressional committees, to assess whether the Syrian government:
. Is taking tangible actions to eliminate ISIS and other terrorist organizations in cooperation with the United States;
. Is working to remove foreign fighters from high positions in Syrian state and security institutions.
