ABC News reported on Friday, citing American officials, that the United States has decided to send a Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East, a move that reflects the escalating military tensions in the region against the backdrop of the increasing confrontation with Iran.

According to the information provided by the network, the new force includes about 2,200 U.S. Marines and will be deployed aboard three military ships heading to the Middle East, as part of military maneuvers aimed at enhancing the U.S. military presence in the region.

This step comes at a time when the region is witnessing a rapid military escalation between the United States and Iran, with ongoing military strikes and drone and missile attacks on several fronts.

The Marine Expeditionary Force Deploys from Okinawa

An American defense official stated that the force being deployed is an expeditionary unit of the U.S. Marines currently stationed at a military base in Okinawa, Japan.

The official clarified that this force will head to the Middle East to support military operations related to the confrontation with Iran, as part of a plan to enhance U.S. military capabilities in the region.

The U.S. Marine expeditionary forces are known for their rapid deployment capabilities, as they are trained to carry out various military operations including evacuation, amphibious landings, and crisis response.

The New Force Includes About 2,500 Soldiers

According to the defense official, the Marine expeditionary force could consist of about 2,500 military personnel, accompanied by military ships capable of supporting operations at sea and on land.

The official noted that this force possesses multi-mission capabilities, allowing it to carry out various operations in the region, including supporting U.S. forces deployed in the Middle East.

The missions of these forces typically include amphibious operations, rapid combat missions, as well as supporting humanitarian operations and evacuating civilians in emergencies.

Operations Include Evacuations and Amphibious Landings

The American official confirmed that the Marine expeditionary force would be capable of conducting evacuation operations and deploying forces via the sea if circumstances require it.

Evacuation operations are among the most prominent tasks carried out by these units in crisis situations, especially when certain areas face security or military threats that necessitate the rapid extraction of civilians or diplomats.

This force can also conduct amphibious landings to support U.S. forces or protect strategic interests in the region.

Escalation of U.S. Military Presence in the Middle East

The deployment of a new Marine force to the Middle East comes at a time when the United States is working to enhance its military presence in the region, amid concerns about the expansion of military confrontation.

Analysts believe that strengthening the U.S. military presence by sending additional forces and warships reflects Washington's readiness to face multiple scenarios, whether it be an escalation of conflict or the need to protect military bases and U.S. interests.

Moreover, the deployment of the Marine expeditionary force may play an important role in rapid crisis response, especially amid ongoing military tensions between Iran and the United States and their impact on the security and stability of the region.
