Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, announced today, Tuesday, an upcoming visit to the Syrian capital, Damascus.
According to Mikati's statement to Lebanese media, "Mikati will meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, leading a delegation of ministers and security officials."
Mikati said, "I will visit Damascus soon and meet with President al-Assad with a ministerial and security delegation to discuss all pending issues and follow up on the Jeddah meeting between the defense ministers of both countries."
This announcement comes after the meeting between Syrian Defense Minister, Muhannad Abu Qusayr, and his Lebanese counterpart, Michel Aoun, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on March 28th, where the two sides agreed on the "importance of demarcating the borders between the two countries," forming legal and specialized committees in various fields, as well as activating coordination mechanisms to address security and military challenges, especially along the shared borders.
It is worth mentioning that the Lebanese-Syrian borders witnessed fierce clashes in February between fighters affiliated with the Lebanese Hezbollah party and forces from the Syrian Arab Army in several border areas.
