American actor James Van Der Beek has passed away at the age of 48 after a battle with illness, as announced by his family in an emotional statement released by his wife, Kimberly.
Van Der Beek is considered one of the prominent stars of television drama, having gained widespread fame for portraying the character 'Dawson Leery' in the popular series Dawson's Creek, which aired for six seasons from 1998 to 2003. He also participated in several films, including Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, The Big Bang, and Labor Day.
The late artist was diagnosed with colon and rectal cancer in August 2023, before publicly announcing his illness in November 2024, after a period of keeping his health condition private.
His wife Kimberly stated in a message published on behalf of the family: 'Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully this morning. He faced his final days with courage, faith, and acceptance. We ask for privacy during this difficult time as we mourn our husband, father, son, brother, and dear friend.'
In a previous interview with Business Insider, Van Der Beek revealed the beginnings of discovering his illness, noting that he noticed changes in his bowel movements, which are common symptoms of colon cancer, before later seeking medical tests after attempting to adjust his dietary habits.
The actor leaves behind his wife Kimberly and their six children: Olivia, Joshua, Annabelle, Emilia, Gwen, and Jeremiah.
