Mazloum Abdi confirmed today, Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the necessity of integrating all self-administration institutions into the Syrian state, indicating that the integration is not limited to the Kurdish component only, but includes the entire administrative and security structure. He added that the integration process may take some time, but he is optimistic about the parties' ability to successfully implement the agreement.
Integration of SDF Forces into the Syrian Army
Abdi pointed out in a conference for dignitaries in the city of Hasakah that the agreement stipulates the integration of "SDF" forces into the brigades of the Syrian Ministry of Defense, noting that there are some details related to the appointment of an assistant Minister of Defense in Damascus, which are being worked on to be officially announced. He also emphasized the necessity of maintaining the positions of security personnel and their directors within the structure of the Syrian Ministry of Interior, indicating that the process has already begun on the ground.
Comprehensive Agreement for Ceasefire and Stabilization of Control
It is worth mentioning that Damascus and "SDF" signed a comprehensive agreement on January 30 that stipulated the establishment of a ceasefire and the initiation of steps for the total integration of Kurdish forces into the Syrian army. The agreement included the handover of "SDF" military centers in the cities of Hasakah and Qamishli, in addition to airports and oil fields in the northeast of the country, to government forces.
Context of Military and Political Developments
This step comes after military confrontations in the areas of Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, and northeastern Syria, during which Syrian forces managed to regain control over the mentioned areas. It also came after American mediation efforts to push both sides towards de-escalation and to reach a final agreement that ends the state of tension that has persisted for years.
