In collaboration with "UNIDO".. Syria explores mechanisms to develop its industrial sector according to global environmental standards

The Ministry of Local Administration and Environment in Syria held an extensive meeting on Tuesday chaired by Minister Mohammad Anjarani, with the presence of a delegation from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and a group of experts and specialists, to enhance international cooperation in the fields of environmental protection and achieving sustainable development.
The discussion during the meeting focused on the reality of the Syrian environment and the challenges facing the industrial sector, while exploring ways to develop it according to global environmental standards. The importance of rationalizing water and chemical consumption in industrial facilities was also discussed, along with developing effective mechanisms for managing and recycling industrial waste in line with local conditions.
The meeting included a comprehensive presentation on the state of the environment in Syria, where it was emphasized that "there is a need to raise environmental awareness and reconsider related legislations, especially those related to industry, to ensure a balance between economic development and environmental preservation."
The discussion also touched on the role of local councils in supporting the environmental sector, emphasizing "the importance of empowering them and providing them with the necessary resources to identify and implement environmental project priorities."
For its part, UNIDO presented practical proposals that included "conducting an infrastructure survey in industrial areas to identify vulnerabilities," along with the idea of "creating green industrial zones and craft villages that rely on environmentally friendly technologies and support small industries."
At the end of the meeting, the organization's delegation expressed "their readiness to provide the necessary technical support to the ministry and assist it in fulfilling its international commitments," confirming that "Syria has the essential components to transition to a more sustainable industrial model if efforts are directed correctly."
This meeting represents an important step towards building an industrial sector that is more in harmony with the environment in Syria, and opens up new horizons for cooperation with UNIDO for the exchange of experiences and the application of innovative solutions. With a clear vision and commitment from the parties, the prospects for transitioning to sustainable development seem closer than ever.
