In a new development that warns of escalating tensions on the eastern front of Europe, the German Foreign Minister announced on Sunday evening his country's full solidarity with Romania, following the incursion of a Russian drone into its airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine.
The minister described the incident as an "unacceptable violation of the sovereignty of an EU and NATO partner," emphasizing that this violation poses a direct threat to European collective security.
The incident occurred near the Romanian-Ukrainian border, where F-16 aircraft detected the Russian drone before it disappeared from radar, according to the Romanian Ministry of Defense.
The Romanian Defense Minister condemned what he described as "reckless Russian behavior," stressing his country's readiness to defend every inch of NATO territory.
The German response comes in the context of broader European movements, as Poland is also on high alert after similar incursions, while NATO has launched Operation "Eastern Guardian" to enhance air defenses along the Ukrainian border.
