The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, confirmed that the agreement signed today with Iran regarding its nuclear program represents a "step in the right direction" towards restoring trust and enhancing international oversight.
Grossi's statements came during a joint press conference in Cairo, where he was joined by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atti, where he explained that the signed document is a technical agreement that includes mechanisms for restoring inspections and necessary activities within Iran, in line with the Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Safeguards Agreement.
Grossi pointed out that the agency understands the nature of the difficult challenges Tehran has faced in recent months, but emphasized that diplomacy and commitment to peace are the way to overcome crises.
He added: "Iran has taken important measures that we highly respect, and the agency has guarantees and executive mechanisms to ensure compliance."
Grossi affirmed that the understanding achieved in Cairo paves the way for the implementation of international agreements in good faith, considering that the new signing represents the beginning of a longer path that requires more future steps.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi signed the agreement alongside Grossi at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry headquarters in the capital Cairo, in a step described as a positive signal towards enhancing cooperation between Iran and the atomic agency.
