The killing of American right-wing activist Charlie Kirk has raised a wave of concern in political and media circles, after he was shot once during a public event at "Utah Valley" University in Orem, attended by more than three thousand people.
Kirk, known for his strong alliance with President Donald Trump, was one of the prominent faces of the conservative movement among youth and a co-founder of "Turning Point USA".
The Suspect Remains Silent
The suspect in the case, Tyler Robinson (22 years old), is still in custody in Utah, and charges are expected to be formally filed against him on Tuesday.
According to Governor Spencer Cox, Robinson has not confessed to investigators and has not cooperated with them, while those around him, including his roommate, have cooperated significantly with authorities.
Details of the Crime
The crime occurred on Wednesday when Robinson climbed onto the roof of one of the university buildings and shot Kirk from a distance, resulting in his immediate death after being hit in the neck.
Authorities managed to apprehend him after a 33-hour chase that ended at his parents' home, more than 400 kilometers from the scene of the incident.
Background of the Suspect
Robinson is a third-year student in an electrical vocational training program at "Dixie Technical College", part of Utah's public university system.
State records show that he is a registered voter but is not affiliated with any political party. Relatives' statements indicate that he has become more interested in politics in recent years and expressed his discontent with Kirk and his ideas, which may suggest possible motives for the crime.
Concerns Over Rising Political Violence
The incident has brought back concerns over rising political violence in the United States, amid increasing division between right-wing and left-wing factions.
Governor Cox stated at a press conference that "all individuals surrounding the suspect were cooperative, which is extremely important," noting that investigations are ongoing to determine the true motive behind the crime.
