Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas confirmed that the peace summit held in Sharm El Sheikh, jointly sponsored by the United States and Egypt, represents an important milestone in the course of the Palestinian issue, noting that it addressed the fundamental issues related to the ceasefire in Gaza, the prisoners' file, humanitarian aid, as well as the Israeli withdrawal from the sector.
In his statements, Abbas emphasized that what was achieved at the summit must be completed with two pivotal steps: the first is the reconstruction of Gaza, which requires extensive international and Arab efforts to alleviate the suffering of the population and restore normalcy to life.
The second is to launch a comprehensive peace process through an international conference that lays clear foundations for a just and lasting settlement, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
The Palestinian president considered that this phase represents the beginning of a new path, but he linked its success to the extent of the parties' commitment to implementing what has been agreed upon, and to the ability of the international community to provide the necessary political and economic support to ensure the continuation of the truce and transform it into sustainable peace.
