In an unprecedented move in international diplomatic work, the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, is chairing a meeting of the United Nations Security Council today, Monday, at the UN headquarters in New York City.
The White House stated that the meeting, scheduled to take place at 3 PM local time (20:00 GMT), will focus on the increasing challenges faced by children in conflict areas, highlighting the role of technology and education in protecting them and enhancing their future opportunities.
According to UN officials, the session will address the growing relationship between armed conflicts and the digital challenges affecting children, in addition to exploring ways to leverage technology to support education in fragile and war-affected environments.
For his part, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric noted that this initiative reflects the importance the United States places on the work of the Security Council and the humanitarian issues on its agenda.
This session marks a precedent in the council's history, as Melania Trump becomes the first wife of a U.S. president to chair an official meeting of the UN Security Council.
This comes at a time when the United States holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council during the month of March, a position that allows it to manage the sessions of the council, which includes 15 member states, and is the most prominent body in the international security system.
