YouTube Algorithms Lead Children to Disturbing and Distorted Content

Journalist Harry Wallop conducted an experiment using a device without personal data, starting by watching safe clips like “Peppa Pig” and “Cocomelon,” before the platform, in just one day, began suggesting distorted and terrifying videos, including clips showing children's characters in bloody scenarios with disturbing effects.
The suggested clips varied between AI-generated scenes involving violence or risky behaviors, as well as strange images of sports stars and public figures, in content described by experts as shocking and appealing to children due to its speed and effects, especially through “Shorts” clips.
Experts warned that this experience could affect children's mental health and behavior, noting that YouTube's algorithms do not accurately distinguish between safe and harmful content, while most children continue to use the main app instead of “YouTube Kids,” increasing the likelihood of exposure to inappropriate content.
