Borge Brende, Chairman and CEO of the World Economic Forum since 2017, announced his resignation on Thursday, just weeks after the forum launched an independent investigation into his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.
Details of the Investigation and Revelation
Brende's decision came after information was revealed from the U.S. Department of Justice, indicating that he had three business dinners with Epstein and communicated with him via email and text messages. Brende stated in a statement: "After careful consideration, I have decided to resign from my position as Chairman and CEO of the World Economic Forum. My time here, which has lasted for eight and a half years, has been extremely fruitful."
Brende, a former Norwegian Foreign Minister, confirmed that he is grateful for the cooperation with his colleagues and partners, adding that it is time for the forum to continue its work without any distractions.
Management of the Forum After Resignation
In a separate statement, Andre Hoffmann and Larry Fink, the co-chairs of the forum, said that the independent review conducted by an external advisor regarding Brende's relationship with Epstein has concluded, and the findings indicated that there are no additional concerns beyond what has been previously disclosed.
The statement noted that Alois Zwingli will take over as the interim Chairman and CEO of the forum, while the Board of Trustees will oversee the leadership transition process, including developing a plan to identify a permanent successor.
