The Iranian president, Masoud Bezhakian, reiterated that his country does not seek to develop nuclear weapons, emphasizing the commitment to the fatwa of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei that prohibits the manufacture of such weapons.
Response to American Accusations
Bezhakian's statements came in the context of an indirect response to the positions of the American administration, which accuses Tehran of seeking to possess military nuclear capabilities.
The Iranian president stated on Thursday that Iran "does not seek to possess a nuclear weapon," while also affirming that "no power can bring down our country."
Proposal via Oman to Washington
At the same time, informed Iranian sources revealed that Tehran conveyed a proposal to the United States through Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, according to the IRNA news agency.
The sources added that the Iranian proposal focuses on confirming the peaceful nature of the nuclear program, considering that its rejection by Washington would reflect "a lack of seriousness" in the negotiation process, and that American calls for diplomacy may just be a political maneuver.
Third Round of Talks
These developments come ahead of the third round of indirect nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington, amid ongoing American accusations against Iran of seeking to possess nuclear weapons.
The Iranian delegation, headed by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, arrived at the Omani diplomatic mission in Geneva to participate in the negotiations.
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is the final decision-maker in the Iranian nuclear program, and he issued a fatwa in the early millennium prohibiting the manufacture of nuclear weapons, a fatwa that Tehran repeatedly affirms its commitment to.
