A statement issued by the Turkish Presidency regarding the meeting of Pope Leo with the First Lady of Turkey, Emine Erdoğan, in the Vatican today, Wednesday, stated that the Pope informed the First Lady of his intention to visit Turkey at the end of November.
The Presidency's statement mentioned that the Pope met with the wife of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the Vatican and informed her that officials from Ankara and the Vatican are working on the details of the visit.
Pope Leo, who was elected on May 8th as the successor to the late Pope Francis, has not announced any foreign trips so far.
Pope Francis had intended to visit Turkey before his death to celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the First Church Council with Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
It is widely expected that Leo will make the visit instead of Francis.
Bartholomew had earlier told an Italian television station that he and Leo discussed the possibility of the new Pope traveling to Turkey in late November.
