Sri Lanka announced that a second Iranian warship is heading towards its territorial waters, in a development that comes just one day after an Iranian warship was sunk in the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lankan Information Minister Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the Iranian ship is currently outside the territorial waters and is heading towards them, without providing additional details regarding the nature of the mission or its destination.

More than 100 sailors on board the ship

According to official sources reported by Reuters, the crew of the second Iranian ship includes more than 100 people, which increases the sensitivity of the situation amid rising military tensions in the region.

Sinking of the Iranian Frigate 'Dina'

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Wednesday that an American submarine sank the Iranian frigate Dina in the Indian Ocean after targeting it with a torpedo.
Hegseth stated during a press conference at the U.S. Department of Defense that the Iranian ship believed it was safe within international waters before being attacked.
He added that this incident marks the first time a warship has been sunk by an American torpedo since World War II.

Casualties and Survivors from the Crew

According to official reports, the attack resulted in the deaths of 87 sailors from the Iranian ship's crew, while authorities in Sri Lanka managed to rescue 32 people who were on board.
Sri Lankan authorities also announced the recovery of several bodies from the sea after the ship sank off its coast.

Escalating Tensions in the Region

The movement of the second Iranian ship comes at a time when the Indian Ocean is experiencing increasing tensions, with ongoing indirect confrontations between the United States and Iran.
Observers believe that the approach of the ship to Sri Lankan waters may add a new dimension to the crisis, especially with the increase in military movements in the region.
