The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced today, Wednesday, that NATO's air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched from Iran towards Turkey, after it crossed over Syria and Iraq, noting that there were no fatalities or injuries.
The ministry confirmed that Turkey reserves the right to respond to any threat or hostile action, but called on all parties to exercise restraint to avoid escalation.
This incident comes in the context of the escalating regional war between Israel and Iran, which began on February 28 with an Israeli operation named "Lion's Roar," followed by a large-scale American operation called "Raging Fury," targeting Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior military leaders.
Iran responded by launching batches of missiles and drones towards Israel, in addition to targeting American bases and interests in Gulf countries, while Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened to assassinate any new leader if they continued policies that threaten Israel and allied countries.
