Trump's Envoy Sparks Controversy: Could Iran Be Excluded and Italy Participate in the 2026 World Cup?

Trump's Envoy Sparks Controversy Over Possible Exclusion of Iran and Inclusion of Italy in the 2026 World Cup
Paolo Zamboli, the special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump, has ignited widespread controversy following his statements regarding the potential participation of Italy in the 2026 World Cup instead of the Iranian team, asserting that this possibility may exceed 50%.
Zamboli: Over 50% Chance for Italy Instead of Iran
Zamboli stated in media remarks that there is a “chance exceeding 50%” for Italy to participate in the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, instead of Iran.
He added that the final decision rests with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and U.S. President Donald Trump, without clarifying Trump's official stance so far.
Upcoming Meeting with Infantino and Controversial Statements
Zamboli clarified during an interview on the program “Politics in Football” via Italian radio (RAI GR Parlamento) that he will meet Gianni Infantino in Miami during the Formula 1 race this weekend.
He affirmed, saying: “The World Cup should not take place without Italy, and the decision is now in the hands of Infantino and Trump.”
Background of the Idea and Its Connection to Political Situations and Visas
Zamboli, a former model agent, explained that he proposed the idea after noticing that Iran's participation has not been finalized due to the war.
He said he asked Infantino about the possibility of Italy's return, noting that the difficulty of obtaining visas at this time could be a significant factor.
He added: “We do not want people who may engage in bad acts in the United States, and if unwelcome individuals are to be received, it is better not to let them come.”
Trump's Position and Rubio's Statements Without an Official Decision
Zamboli clarified that he has not spoken directly with Trump, but indicated that the U.S. President has not yet made a definitive stance.
He also referred to statements by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who emphasized not allowing unwelcome individuals into the United States.
Division Within the Italian Football Community
The report confirmed that Zamboli faces rejection from several figures in Italian football, who have expressed their opposition to the idea of Italy participating instead of Iran in the tournament.
It seems that the initiative lacks official support within Italian football, as some consider it an unrealistic individual endeavor.
Zamboli's Role and His Attempts to Pressure FIFA
Paolo Zamboli is known as an American of Italian descent and a former model agent, currently serving as Trump's special envoy for global partnerships.
He is independently trying to pressure FIFA to include Italy in the 2026 World Cup instead of Iran.
Iran's Team Situation in the 2026 World Cup Draw
According to the draw, the Iranian team is in Group G alongside teams from Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand.
The Iranian team also requested to host its matches in Mexico instead of the United States, but this request was rejected by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
