Tesla Begins Production of First Fully Autonomous Robotaxi Without Steering Wheel or Driver

Tesla Begins Production of Self-Driving Taxi Without Steering Wheel or Pedals
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, announced that the company has officially started producing a self-driving taxi (Robotaxi) with only two seats, without a steering wheel or pedals, in a move that reflects a significant shift towards autonomous vehicles.
Musk shared a video on his platform "X" showing the new vehicle during the production process inside the manufacturing lines.
Revolutionary Design Focused on Full Autonomy
The new vehicle is designed to operate entirely without human intervention, as it lacks a steering wheel or pedals, reflecting Tesla's increasing focus on fully relying on autonomous driving technologies and robotics.
This step is part of the company's strategy to enhance advanced autonomous driving systems, with expectations of obtaining regulatory approval in the European Union in the coming months.
Tesla Bets on Robotaxi and Human-Like Robots for Future Growth
Elon Musk confirmed that the company's long-term growth will primarily depend on robotaxi services and human-like robots, in a strategic shift away from traditional reliance on car sales alone.
Tesla is also working to enhance its production line by offering lower-priced models than the "Model 3" and "Model Y" to support global demand.
Strong Financial Results for Q1 2026
Tesla announced its financial results for the first quarter, reporting earnings that exceeded analysts' expectations, although revenues came in below estimates.
- Revenue: $22.39 billion (+16% year-on-year)
- Net Income: $477 million (+17%)
- Adjusted Earnings Per Share: $0.41 compared to $0.35 previously
Increase in Global Deliveries Despite Challenges
Tesla saw a growth in global deliveries during the first quarter by 6.3%, reaching 358,023 vehicles, after experiencing a 13% decline in the same period last year.
This improvement comes amid the company's efforts to recover its sales in global markets.
Commercial Pressures and Challenges in Global Markets
Tesla faces pressures on its shipments and sales in several markets around the world, partly due to tariffs imposed in the United States during President Donald Trump's administration, which affected trade flows and supply chains.
