The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has expressed its welcome to the recent statements made by the U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he hinted at the possibility of easing or lifting the sanctions imposed on Syria, considering it a positive step that may help alleviate the humanitarian and economic burdens on the Syrian people.
In a statement issued, the Syrian Foreign Ministry affirmed that the sanctions imposed on the country, although previously directed against a "defunct dictatorial regime," are now exacerbating the suffering of citizens and hindering recovery and reconstruction efforts.
The ministry called for a "comprehensive lifting of sanctions" as a necessary step to enhance peace and stability in Syria and the region, and to enable international cooperation in rebuilding the country.
Trump's remarks came during his discussion about the possibility of easing sanctions at the request of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, where he mentioned:"We are seriously considering this, as President Erdogan has asked us to lift the sanctions on Syria to give it a fresh start."
Trump added that Washington will work with Ankara to study the issue, taking into account factors such as regional security and bilateral relations between the two countries, in the pursuit of achieving stability in the region.
This development comes amid increasing calls to ease the international sanctions on Syria, amidst warnings of their continued negative impact on the humanitarian situation, while the recent American statements indicate a potential openness to changing policies towards Damascus.
