Swedish Minister of Climate and Environment Romina Pormokhtari announced that her country will lift the ban on uranium mining starting from January 2026, confirming that the goal is to reduce Sweden's dependence on energy imports and utilize its national reserves.

The minister added that the decision will be discussed in a cabinet meeting on August 28, with implementation set to begin at the start of 2026.

Sweden had imposed the ban for decades for environmental and political reasons, despite having large reserves of uranium, particularly in the central part of the country.
