Sorrow has cast a shadow over Alexandria Governorate in northern Egypt, following a tragic incident that occurred at "Abu Talat" beach in the Al-Ajami area, where six girls drowned yesterday morning during a student trip organized by one of the academies specializing in aviation hospitality, while 24 others were injured.
As condolences and calls for an investigation continue, social media users widely circulated a video documenting the moments leading up to the tragedy, showing a beach official clearly warning the girls and supervisors, urging them not to enter the sea due to bad weather and high waves.
The official warned that the red flags were clearly raised, indicating that swimming was completely prohibited under these dangerous conditions, saying:
"We don't know how families feel when someone is drowning,"
and calling for sticking to sports activities on the beach without risking going into the water.
However, the warnings fell on deaf ears, as one girl insisted on swimming, and she was swept away by a strong wave. When five of her classmates tried to save her, the waves carried them one after the other, leading to the disaster amid panic and confusion among the students and supervisors.
One of the survivors from the hospital said, in a painful testimony:
"One wave lost us all".
For its part, the Egyptian Ministry of Health announced that the incident resulted in the death of 6 students and the injury of 24 others, with three being treated at the scene, while 13 injured were transferred to Al-Ajami Specialized Hospital, and eight others to Al-Amiriya General Hospital for necessary treatment.
The ministry confirmed that the injured are undergoing precise medical protocols to treat cases of "asphyxia" resulting from drowning, under the supervision of specialized medical teams.
This tragedy once again raises questions about supervision and safety mechanisms in student trips, and the extent of adherence to the instructions issued by the relevant authorities, amid calls for an immediate investigation to hold accountable those responsible and prevent the recurrence of such painful incidents.
