Supporters of the detained Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir organized a protest in front of the Bahaa Hariri Mosque in the city of Sidon, southern Lebanon, in objection to his continued detention and that of several detained Lebanese, demanding a comprehensive solution to the issue of arrests.
Demands of the Protesters and Selective Justice
The wife of al-Assir, during the protest, called for the release of the detained Lebanese, similar to the detained Syrians in Lebanese prisons, considering that what is happening constitutes selective justice. She emphasized the need for a comprehensive legal approach that includes all detainees without exception.
Timing of the Protest and Judicial Agreement File
The protest coincided with the announcement of the signing of a judicial agreement between Lebanon and Syria at the Grand Serail in the capital Beirut, concerning the transfer of convicts from the country of the ruling to the country of the convict's nationality, which brought the issue of detainees in Lebanese prisons back to the forefront.
Background of the Case
It is noteworthy that the Beirut Criminal Court held a public session on January 9 to consider the case of the attempted murder of a figure in the "Resistance Brigades," Bilal Hamoud, which included the trial of artist Fadl Shaker, Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir, and four other defendants.
During the session, al-Assir admitted to establishing an armed formation called "Free Resistance Brigades" consisting of about 200 members, justifying this by what he described as the state's failure to protect him and his supporters, and attacks and assassinations he attributed to the "Resistance Brigades," confirming that he had informed the official authorities of his decision at that time.
In contrast, al-Assir denied funding or arming artist Fadl Shaker, and denied his presence at the scene of the incident in which Bilal Hamoud claimed an attempted murder, confirming that he initiated contact with the Internal Security Forces to address the issue.
