An Israeli source revealed that Hamas has received a modified version of the US Middle East envoy Steve Wicoff's proposal, after adjustments to ensure progress in talks related to ceasefire and prisoner release. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Tuesday "significant progress" in negotiations for releasing prisoners held in Gaza, expecting Hamas to respond to the modified version in the coming days. If accepted, a quick visit by Wicoff to the region is anticipated. US President Donald Trump urged Netanyahu to swiftly end the war in Gaza amid intense American pressure to reach a ceasefire agreement soon. A reliable source informed Reuters that Washington has provided additional guarantees to Hamas, including clear steps to end the conflict, expressing American optimism while the Israeli side remains cautious. A US State Department official stated that the agreement is on the table, urging Hamas to accept the offer and avoid further recklessness, warning of the consequences of continuing hostage-taking, including American casualties. However, sources within Hamas denied knowledge of any new offers for a ceasefire, reflecting a state of ambiguity in the negotiations. Wicoff's original proposal called for a 60-day ceasefire in exchange for releasing 28 out of 56 prisoners held by Hamas, in return for the release of over 1200 Palestinian prisoners by Israel, as well as allowing humanitarian aid into the sector. It is worth noting that Israel has escalated its military operations in Gaza since the fragile ceasefire collapsed in March, with its forces penetrating the southern part of the sector and imposing a suffocating blockade preventing the entry of food and medicine, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis amid international calls to urgently open the crossings.
