Comprehensive Strike Disrupts Air Traffic in Germany and Leads to Hundreds of Flight Cancellations

A joint strike by pilots and cabin crew of the German airline "Lufthansa" has resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights, as the work stoppage has continued for the fourth consecutive day, causing widespread disruption to the company's operations and its subsidiaries.

The impact included flights operated by the main brand "Lufthansa", as well as "Lufthansa Cargo" for freight, in light of ongoing labor disputes over wages.

Frankfurt Airport Records 656 Cancellations Out of More Than 1300 Operations

Frankfurt Airport, operated by "Fraport", recorded 656 cancellations out of 1313 scheduled takeoffs and landings for today, Thursday.

These figures include all airlines operating at the airport, but the majority of cancellations are attributed to "Lufthansa" operations affected by the ongoing strike.

Mediation Attempt Fails in Wage Dispute Between "Lufthansa" and Pilots' Union

An attempt at mediation that took place yesterday, Wednesday, to resolve the collective wage dispute failed, as "Lufthansa" and the pilots' union "Cockpit" could not reach an agreement on the agenda of issues under negotiation.

This failure complicates the crisis further, with the strike continuing and no signs of a near resolution.

Merz: Reducing Flight Numbers is Not an Option for "Lufthansa"

In this context, Merz stated that "reducing flight numbers is not an option for Lufthansa", referring to the importance of maintaining operational levels despite the strikes and current challenges facing the company.

"Eurowings" Operates Over 70% of Its Flights Despite the Strike

The company "Eurowings", owned by the "Lufthansa" Group, successfully operated over 70% of its scheduled flights, thanks to the volunteering of several additional pilots to work during the strike period.

The company clarified that only a part of its fleet is subject to the strike law in Germany, noting that hundreds of pilots operating on German aircraft volunteered to ensure the continuation of some flights.

Strike Impact Extends to Various Companies Within the Lufthansa Group

The impact was not limited to the main company only, but also affected other companies within the group such as "Lufthansa Cargo" and "CityLine", leading to an expansion of disruption in air and freight transport operations both within Germany and abroad.

Protests Affect Celebrations for 100 Years of "Lufthansa" Foundation

The strike coincided with events celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of "Lufthansa", as labor protests overshadowed the celebratory atmosphere, at a time when the company is experiencing one of its most turbulent periods.

Threat of Continued Strike on Friday

Reports indicate that the strike may continue into Friday for some other companies within the group, opening the door for further disruptions in air traffic if a quick resolution to the ongoing dispute is not reached.
