Lecornu Announces the End of His Mission: France Awaits a New Prime Minister Within 48 Hours

Resigned French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Wednesday evening that his mission in leading the government "has ended," indicating that President Emmanuel Macron will appoint a new Prime Minister within the next forty-eight hours.
Lecornu said in an interview with France 2: "I informed the President of the Republic that the chances of dissolving Parliament are diminishing, and I believe this situation allows him to name a new Prime Minister within 48 hours. As of this evening, I see that my mission has ended."
He added that the country needs a greater ability to reach compromises within Parliament, emphasizing that the upcoming government must be "completely separate from presidential ambitions" in preparation for the next phase.
President Macron had given Lecornu a final deadline until Wednesday evening to decide whether to stay or leave, amid a heated political crisis within the French Parliament that hinders the passage of essential legislation.
Lecornu pointed out that economic and social challenges, primarily the pension system, still represent one of the main points of contention in the political arena, stating: "It is difficult to say that the discussion about pensions is unnecessary... We will have to continue working hard to find real solutions before the next presidential elections."
The Élysée Palace is expected to announce the name of the new Prime Minister within two days, amid internal anticipation regarding the outcomes of the government change and its ability to break the political deadlock that France has been experiencing for months.
