Today, Monday, the province of Izmir in western Turkey witnessed a serious security incident involving an armed attack targeting a police station in the region of Balçova, carried out by a 16-year-old using a shotgun.
The attack resulted in the death of two police officers, while a third was injured, according to local Turkish media, including "NTV" and "Dogan" news agency.
Security forces managed to apprehend the attacker after the assault, and he was taken for interrogation amid a state of heightened security in the area.
In subsequent developments, the prosecutor in Izmir announced that the number of injured had risen to six people, all of whom are civilians, without providing additional details about their health conditions.
This attack comes at a time when Turkey is experiencing escalating political and security tensions, especially after local authorities in Istanbul imposed a complete ban on demonstrations and public gatherings in six districts until September 10, due to movements related to the opposition Republican People's Party.
These measures coincided with the preparations of former deputy Gursel Tekin, along with a temporary committee appointed by the court, to take over the management of the Republican People's Party branch in Istanbul, after a court ordered the dismissal of the current branch president due to alleged violations at the party conference in 2023.
The timing of the attack in Izmir, along with the tightening of security in Istanbul, raises questions about the increasing political and security pressures in the country, amid ongoing restrictions on social media and the internet.
