Iraq Between the Fires of War: Foreign Minister Reveals Baghdad's Role in the US-Iran Conflict

The Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein, in exclusive statements, revealed that Iraq has not officially entered the war, but has been drawn into a military confrontation geographically expanding between the United States and Iran. He emphasized that the armed factions within the country do not have the decision of war and peace, and that the Iraqi government condemns all attacks, whether inside Iraq or against Iran.

Hussein confirmed that the escalation of attacks within Iraqi territory makes the country part of the war without any official decision, stressing that the Iraqi government rejects any attack on neighboring countries, and that the armed factions loyal to Iran do not possess strategic or military decision-making.

He added that the weakness of internal control has contributed to the escalation of attacks, and that Baghdad has formed security and military committees to monitor any ongoing threats.

The Foreign Minister pointed out that the escalation of attacks on Baghdad and Erbil has led several diplomatic missions to leave Iraq unofficially, warning that the continuation of these attacks could lead to stricter diplomatic measures, increasing regional tension and threatening internal stability.

Hussein denied the existence of any armed activity by the Iranian opposition inside Iraq, confirming that these factions are only present in refugee camps, and that they carry out attacks on US bases inside Iraq with support from Tehran.

He pointed out that Iraq condemns attacks on Iran just as it condemns Iranian strikes within its territory, emphasizing that the war has expanded to include economic and oil targets, while Gulf countries have not initiated any attack against Iran.

The minister revealed that Gulf countries and Jordan have submitted official objections to the attacks launched from within Iraq, and that diplomatic communications with Baghdad are ongoing to ensure that the conflict does not expand.

He stressed that the Iraqi government considers any attack on neighboring countries a violation of the constitution, affirming the continuation of security monitoring and regional coordination to avoid any potential security explosion.

Since the outbreak of the war on February 28 between the United States, Israel, and Iran, Iraqi factions loyal to Tehran have been targeting US bases daily with rockets and drones, while their headquarters are subjected to American and Israeli airstrikes, in addition to strikes on Iranian opposition sites in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and security force centers in some provinces.
