The Iranian authorities announced the arrest of dozens of individuals in several provinces, suspected of being organizers of the recent disturbances that have occurred in the country since the end of December 2025.
Details of the Arrests
In Gilan Province in northern Iran, the provincial police chief, Hossein Hassan Pour, stated that security forces arrested 50 key leaders of the disturbances, noting that the total number of detainees in the province exceeded 1,500. He added that the identification of all those involved in incitement and riots is still ongoing.
In Khorasan Province in the northeast of the country, the Attorney General announced the arrest of 72 individuals on charges related to organization, while additional arrests were reported in Tehran, Karaj, Rasht, and Ardabil.
Background of the Protests
The protests in Iran erupted at the end of December 2025 due to economic crises, primarily the depreciation of the national currency, and then expanded to include political demands, escalating following calls from Reza Pahlavi, the son of the former Shah of Iran.
Authorities' Response
The government responded to the protests with strict security measures, including cutting off the internet and using force, resulting in casualties among protesters and security forces. On January 12, authorities announced that the situation had been brought under control, accusing the United States and Israel of organizing the disturbances.
