Iran Agrees Not to Retain Uranium... Will Diplomatic Solution Succeed?

In a significant development on the nuclear front, Oman's Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi announced yesterday, Friday, February 27, 2026, that Iran has agreed not to retain enriched uranium, emphasizing that diplomatic solutions are the only way to avoid escalation in the region.
In an interview with Face The Nation, al-Busaidi stressed the possibility of reaching an agreement between Tehran and Washington, confirming that Iran will abandon enriched materials and that there will be no accumulation of nuclear fuel, which will be fully verified.
He added: "There is an agreement to reduce this fuel to the lowest possible level and convert it into irreversible fuel."
* Positive Talks and Omani Mediation
This announcement came after the conclusion of the third round of indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States in Geneva, which were mediated by Oman.
Al-Busaidi explained that he briefed his Gulf counterparts on the results of this round, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the momentum of negotiations to achieve decisive progress.
Through his account on X platform, al-Busaidi wrote:
"I met today with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, and shared with him details of the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran, as well as the progress made so far. I look forward to achieving further decisive progress in the coming days. Peace is within our reach."
* Trump Expresses Discontent
Despite these developments, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his firm rejection of any enrichment of Iranian uranium, even for civilian purposes, describing the negotiations as insufficient.
He said during an event in Corpus Christi, Texas: "Iran wants to increase its wealth but does not need all this oil," and considered that Tehran "does not want to go far enough, which is very unfortunate."
This third round comes as one of the last opportunities to avoid war amid ongoing nuclear tensions between Washington and Tehran, with active mediation from Oman urging both parties towards a diplomatic solution.
