In a comprehensive speech before the United Nations Security Council today, Thursday, Syria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Alabi, affirmed that the international community has become united around what he described as "the historic opportunity for the new Syria," emphasizing that his country is moving steadily towards national recovery and reconstruction.
Alabi pointed out that Sweida and its people are at the heart of every Syrian, confirming that the Syrian government has made significant efforts to address the impacts of recent events in the governorate and has engaged in all initiatives that led to a roadmap aimed at resolving the crisis.
The roadmap includes key points such as:
- Calling for an independent international investigation committee
- The government's commitment to hold accountable those responsible for violations from all parties
- Enhancing trust and national reconciliation
- Ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid
- Restoring essential services and rebuilding affected villages
Alabi also noted that Syria has overcome difficult stages after liberation and has reached a stage of national dialogue and the formation of a diverse government based on competencies, affirming that the upcoming People's Assembly will include all components with a female representation rate of no less than 20%.
On the political front, he stressed that the upcoming parliamentary elections will be the first step towards consolidating civil peace, while revealing the signing of dozens of agreements and memorandums of economic understanding with countries and international companies aimed at improving the economic reality.
In conclusion, Alabi condemned the repeated Israeli assaults, calling on the Security Council to condemn and prevent them, and to compel the Israeli occupation to withdraw from the Syrian territories it has recently intruded upon, and to end the occupation of the Syrian Golan.
