Hungary commits to ensuring the success of the Putin-Trump summit in Budapest

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed that his government will do everything in its power to ensure the success of the anticipated meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American President Donald Trump in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, describing his country as a "island of peace" in Europe.
Preparations for the Russian-American summit
In a statement to the "Kossuth" radio program on Sunday, Szijjarto explained that the date and details of the talks will be announced after expected consultations between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his American counterpart Marco Rubio in the coming days.
He noted that Hungary had previously announced its readiness to mediate or undertake any activities that would promote peace since the beginning of the war in Ukraine three and a half years ago.
Hungary and Europe's position
The minister confirmed that among the European Union countries, only Hungary and Slovakia are calling for a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian conflict, adding: "Brussels is preparing for war, as it seeks to arm and fund Ukraine, while Hungary is organizing a peace summit."
Organizational measures
On October 16, Trump announced after a phone conversation with Putin that an agreement had been reached to hold the summit soon in Budapest, and accordingly, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban instructed the formation of an organizing committee to prepare for the summit, with preparations starting last Thursday evening.
