High-Level Syrian-European Meeting Discusses Preparations for the People's Assembly Elections in Syria

The Supreme Committee for the Syrian People's Assembly Elections held a meeting on Thursday with a delegation of ambassadors from European Union countries in Damascus to discuss the ongoing arrangements for the electoral entitlement scheduled to take place on October 5.
The committee reported via its channel on "Telegram" that the meeting addressed the technical and organizational aspects of the electoral process. The head of the Supreme Committee, Mohammad Taha Al-Ahmad, reviewed the executive steps taken, "emphasizing the committee's commitment to the principles of transparency and inclusivity, and ensuring the true representation of all components of the Syrian people." He answered the ambassadors' inquiries regarding "the nomination mechanism, seat distribution, and ensuring the integrity of the electoral process."
Al-Ahmad clarified that the meeting discussed "the course of the electoral process and the surrounding circumstances," pointing to "the reasons that led to adopting a two-stage election system: the selection phase, followed by the actual voting phase." He considered that "these elections represent a first step in the path of civil peace and transitional justice, and the restoration of shared coexistence among the components of Syrian society."
Al-Ahmad noted that the discussion focused on "the category of competencies and specialists in the legislative aspect, due to their essential role in overseeing the executive authority," and also addressed the situation in the Raqqa, Hasakah, and Sweida governorates, "where it was emphasized that this issue should be addressed before holding the first session of the council, either by conducting elections in those governorates or taking alternative measures."
For his part, Supreme Committee member, Anas Al-Abda, stated in a statement to the "SANA" agency that the committee "is tasked with establishing the legislative authority, making its work a pivotal step in building the legislative framework for the new Syria." He pointed out that the meeting "left a positive impression on the representatives of the European Union," who expressed "their readiness to accompany the electoral process and support the committee's efforts, emphasizing the importance of ensuring fair representation for all regions, administrative units, and national and ethnic components."
Al-Abda indicated that "the representatives of the European Union expressed their desire to visit the subcommittees and electoral districts," which the Supreme Committee welcomed, confirming the possibility of organizing these visits. He concluded that "the electoral process gains special importance as it fills the legislative void, opens avenues for national dialogue, and enables the state to embark on a new phase."
It is noteworthy that the Supreme Committee has set the polling date for Sunday, 13 Rabi' al-Thani 1447 AH, corresponding to October 5, 2025 AD.
