Germany Warns: Attack on Iran is a 'Political Catastrophe'.. and US-Iran Talks Could Be a Turning Point

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier criticized the attack launched by both the United States and Israel on Iran today, describing it as a "catastrophic political mistake" that could have been avoided.

Steinmeier confirmed that a war on Iran is unnecessary, noting that Tehran is no closer to possessing nuclear weapons today than it was after the 2015 nuclear agreement, in which he participated as Foreign Minister at the time, before former President Donald Trump canceled it.

The German President emphasized the need for a pragmatic approach in foreign policy while adhering to international law, stating: "We must focus on our core interests.. but realism means we should not bend."

German Foreign Minister Johan Wadephul viewed Trump's announcement of talks with Iran as potentially a "turning point" in the ongoing conflict that has lasted nearly a month. He added that these talks, although officially denied by Tehran, are being conducted indirectly and are a positive sign for the possibility of de-escalation.

Wadephul clarified that the five-day deadline set by Trump before any potential attack on Iranian facilities is a "good period," as it allows time for potential negotiations, stressing that a military solution is not an option and that diplomatic solutions are the only way to end the crisis.

The German minister pointed out that continuing dialogue between the United States and Iran, no matter how "fragile" the beginning may be, is a first step towards containing the conflict, urging all parties to strive to ensure the prosperity of this progress and manage the escalation of the dispute.
