In a historic precedent, Sheikha Nasser Al-Nuaimi became the first woman in the world to hold this position since the organization was founded in 1975.
This appointment was considered an Emirati achievement, as UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed his pride in the victory of the UAE candidate, Sheikha Nasser Al-Nuaimi, as the Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization for the period from 2026 to 2029.
He wrote on "Twitter": "We congratulate Sheikha Nasser Al-Nuaimi on her election as Secretary-General of the UNWTO, and we wish her success in her international duties."
He added: "This victory is a source of pride, reflecting the confidence and respect the UAE enjoys on the international stage, and its important position on the world tourism map."
He continued: "This is the first time a woman has won this international position, reflecting the pioneering role played by Emirati women at home and abroad, and the ability of UAE nationals to have a significant presence in international forums."
