Reuters reported that U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced his country's opposition to Russia's nomination for elections to the Board of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which has 36 member states.
The U.S. stance comes in the context of Western pressures imposed on Moscow since the beginning of its military operation in Ukraine, where the United States, the European Union, Canada, and other countries have imposed sanctions that included banning the supply of civilian aircraft and spare parts to Russia, terminating leasing contracts with Russian airlines, in addition to closing their airspace to Russian aircraft.
The ICAO, which was established in 1947 and is headquartered in Montreal, Canada, is one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations, and its tasks include setting technical rules for air navigation and planning the development of the global air transport sector to ensure its security, safety, and sustainable growth.
